Braylan Shelby, EDGE

Among the defensive targets of the Longhorns 2023 class that is being prioritized this offseason is the highly touted four-star Friendswood (TX) edge rusher Braylan Shelby. An important local product for the Longhorns staff in the 2023 class, Shelby is another recruit that Texas will likely have to beat out USC to land a commitment.

Texas and USC are the clear-cut top two schools in this recruitment. This is the type of recruitment that Texas needs to win to keep the top defensive talent in-state and prevent the former Oklahoma Sooners head coach Riley from poaching these Texas blue-chips.

At one point early last month, it appeared that the momentum was sitting with USC in the race to land a commitment from Shelby. But Texas has swung the pendulum in their favor in the last few weeks with Shelby due to a few factors.

First off, Texas landing Arch has increased the appeal in Shelby’s eyes to join the Longhorns 2023 class. We’ve talked about before how Arch has reached out to Shelby and continues to make it known how wanted he is in the Longhorns 2023 class.

Coming out of his official visit weekend last month, Texas also appeared to have pushed all the right buttons with Shelby. That also helped Texas get some momentum back in this recruitment over USC heading into the July dead period.

Moreover, with the likelihood that Shelby is planning on a summer decision timeline, we could very soon see if the work has paid off in this recruitment for Sark, Arch, and the rest of the Longhorns involved here.
