Of the key five-star recruits for the Longhorns at this point of the offseason, the most likely for Texas to get a commitment from is the elite South Oak Cliff cornerback Malik Muhammad. Texas is clearly in the mix among the top schools in the race to land a commitment from Muhammad this summer.

But Texas is going to have to close out this recruitment on a strong footing to lock in on a commitment from Muhammad if he is to announce before the fall. Muhammad might even wind up taking another visit to Austin before he’s ready to announce his commitment.

There are now multiple connections for Muhammad in the Longhorns 2023 class that are worth noting. Texas already has a few blue-chip commits trying to recruit Muhammad to join this 2023 class. And Muhammad’s cousin, three-star South Oak Cliff edge rusher Billy Walton, is already committed to the Longhorns 2023 class.

Moreover, roughly just one week ago, there seemed to be a ton of momentum for the Longhorns staff with Muhammad. If a frontrunner were to be named today for Muhammad, Texas could very likely still hold that spot.

Alabama might wind up posing a bigger challenge than anticipated just a few days ago heading into the fall. The Texas A&M Aggies are also still involved heavily in this recruitment ahead of the July 29 official visit for Muhammad to College Station.
