Breaking down 4 2024 Texas football recruits heating up in July
The insane wave of momentum that hit second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff in the 2023 Texas football recruiting class in the last month or so has kept the focus on the trail almost exclusively on this cycle. But Texas is about to see some of the top targets of the 2024 recruiting class come back to the forefront heading into the fall as the 2023 class starts to round out.
Sark and the Longhorns staff currently hold commitments from 18 recruits in the 2023 class as of the early afternoon of July 11. This class is definitely well over half full, which means that numbers will be limited heading into the fall, thus giving way to a busier news cycle in relation to the 2024 class.
Texas is also set to see some top targets of the 2024 class come to the forefront at the end of this month. Sark and the Longhorns staff are hosting the Texas July BBQ on the final weekend of this month, which will see some highly touted blue-chip targets of multiple different recruiting classes visit Austin.
With that important visit weekend approaching for the Longhorns in just a few weeks, it’s worth taking a look at the status of some of the top targets of the 2024 class in the midst of the summer months.
Here’s a look at a breakdown of four critical recruits for the Longhorns 2024 class that are heating up this summer.
Derrick McFall, ATH
Among the early targets on the radar of the Longhorns 2024 class since last offseason is the highly touted four-star Tyler High athlete/running back Derrick McFall. Texas was the first school to send a scholarship offer McFall’s way, which came back in October 2021. But Texas was also in contact with and scouting out McFall well before that offer went out to him last fall.

Texas has done a nice job making McFall a priority before the start of this offseason, giving them a leg up on most of the other schools that have offered him since the fall of 2021. McFall has received more than a dozen other scholarship offers since Texas was the first to send him the invitation.
But Texas still looks to be one of the top schools in the mix for McFall at this point of his recruitment. Some of the other schools that have emerged seemingly in the top group for McFall are the Texas A&M Aggies and Alabama Crimson Tide.
McFall visited Alabama unofficially last month. And he’s now taken multiple visits to see Texas and Texas A&M in the last 10 months.
It also looks like McFall will be on the visitor list for the Longhorns during the July BBQ on the final weekend of this month.
We’re likely not going to get a decision from McFall anytime soon, but Texas has done a nice job building the foundation for what guarantees to be a hotly contested recruitment in the months ahead. Alabama and Texas A&M will be the top competition to watch on the recruiting trail coming out of the summer in all likelihood for McFall.
