Breaking down 4 2024 Texas football recruits heating up in July
Colin Simmons, EDGE
A top-rated 2024 recruit that holds an offer from the Longhorns is the elite five-star Duncanville edge rusher Colin Simmons. As the top-rated edge rusher recruit for the 2024 cycle, Simmons is definitely a priority target on the big board for the Longhorns 2024 class this offseason.
Texas needs to assert itself now among the top schools for Simmons before his recruitment really starts to enter its prime stages next offseason. But the pieces are in place for Texas to make a real run at making a strong impression on Simmons and his camp this fall.
This is a recruitment similar to that of five-star Denton-Ryan linebacker Anthony Hill and five-star Katy-Paetow defensive lineman David Hicks in the sense that Texas will need to show ample improvement on the field this fall to really move the needle with Simmons. But that does present some good news for the Longhorns heading into the fall.
Texas will have more time to make a really positive impression on Simmons before he arrives at a decision than with other five-star in-state defensive 2023 prospects such as Hill and Hicks.

Texas does look to be in a good spot with Simmons early on in this recruitment, though. Texas was one of the first schools to offer Simmons in the fall of 2021. He’s also been able to see Austin multiple times since the start of the offseason. In fact, Simmons visited Austin three times unofficially in the last six months alone.

The main challenge for Texas moving forward in the race to land a commitment from Simmons will be new head coach Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers. The surging school for Simmons of late is LSU, which hosted him twice just in the month of June. Simmons has visited LSU three times in total since late April.
