Texas football WR Brenen Thompson tabbed as fastest Longhorn in 2022
There is an insane amount of speed present in the wide receiver room for Texas football this year. Need proof of that?
Check out this list from Eric Nahlin of Inside Texas on July 13 that ranked the 10 fastest Longhorns players on the roster in 2022.
Of those 10 players on the list, six are wide receivers. And all of the top three fastest Longhorns players in this ranking are wide receivers.
Now, we did our own list which ranked the fastest Longhorns players on the roster this year. That list we did was based mostly on prior track and 40-yard dash times, along with offseason reports and speed that passed the eye test on the field.
This list from Inside Texas looks to be similar in that some of the reasoning given is a mix of previous track times, the eye test on the field, and offseason reports. It does look like a key factor for them in this ranking are track times from this offseason.
Nonetheless, the player that topped the list for both us and IT among the fastest Longhorns in 2022 was still the former four-star Spearman wide receiver/athlete recruit and incoming freshman speedster Brenen Thompson. This former high school track star might be the fastest blue-chip coming out of the 2022 recruiting cycle. He’s at least one of the three or five fastest recruits from that cycle.
Freshman Texas football WR Brenen Thompson tabbed again as the fastest player on the team in 2022
And here’s what this ranking from IT gave as the reasoning for Thompson topping their list.
"Everyone knows his track credentials are off the charts (10.22 100m, 20.73 200m) but that speed has showed up in 7-on-7. That’s good to hear given the giant leap in competition from Spearman (Texas) to UT. Despite playing subpar competition, Thompson had some of the fastest play-speed you’ll find in high school and he’s already turning heads with his jets."
The insane track times that Thompson posted during his time at Spearman High School were a huge driving factor as to why he topped our list too. Thompson can run a sub-4.4 second 40-yard dash, along with consistent 100-meter dash times under 10.3 seconds.
That’s absolutely insane.
Yet, it’s worth noting how much speed, in general, there is in the wide receiver room this year. The other wideouts that rounded out the top three of this list from IT were star sophomore Xavier Worthy in second place and redshirt junior Jordan Whittington in third.
Worthy put that open-field speed and agility he brings to the table on full display during a breakout true freshman campaign. He was also a track star in high school.
Whittington is also one of the speediest skill position players the Longhorns have in the mix. But Whittington was a player we didn’t have in our top four fastest players for 2022, granted he was essentially an honorable mention.
IT noted that Whittington was measured as one of the fastest players on the team this offseason in terms of miles per hour.
We’ll get to see the insane speed that Texas now has in the receiving corps in less than two months, when the regular season schedule opens up on Sep. 3 at home against Louisiana-Monroe.
