July 14 saw the representatives from the Texas football program take the stand at Big 12 Media Days in Arlington, TX. That included some of the leaders on this team among the players, such as senior linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and junior running back Bijan Robinson.

There were some notable quotes from the former of those two upperclassmen for the Longhorns at Big 12 Media Days on July 14. One noteworthy topic that Overshown discussed at Big 12 Media Days was the impact that the former TCU Horned Frogs longtime head coach and new Texas special assistant Gary Patterson had on the defense, and him in particular, this offseason.

Overshown mentioned that Patterson is essentially helping not just to coach up the “little things” in his game. He also noted how important it is for the players to soak up the time they can get with Patterson whenever it comes along.

It sounds like Overshown is very engaged with Patterson and co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Pete Kwiatkowski this offseason. He mentioned here that he definitely feels like he’s got a better understanding of the defense than he did in Year 1.

Most of all, though, it’s good to hear about Overshown clicking with the coaching staff this year. We didn’t hear much from Overshown in terms of his fit and connection with the staff last year, which led to some issues for him on the field last season.

Having Patterson in his corner to help him improve the finer points of his game this year should help Overshown make some necessary strides in the season ahead. If Overshown can smooth out some of the weaknesses of his game from the last few seasons, then the sky is the limit for him in this defensive front in 2022.

Texas finished up last season with a record of 5-7 (3-6 Big 12), missing out on bowl season for the first time since 2016. Overshown and the Longhorns are set to open up the 2022 regular season on Sep. 3 at home against Louisiana-Monroe.
