Vince Young says that Texas football commit Arch Manning will redshirt
On July 14, the legendary former Texas football quarterback Vince Young joined ESPN’s First Take to talk mainly with the likes of the former USC Trojans star wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson. Young discussed a few notable topics in this segment on First Take, but one particular subject that came up was the elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback and recent Texas commit Arch Manning.
At one point in this discussion on First Take, Young mentioned that from what he’s hearing, Arch is likely going to redshirt for his first year at Texas. He specifically noted that what “he’s hearing is that [Arch] is going to redshirt” and the fact that it is “going to help out a lot”.
I would assume the part that Arch redshirting will “help out a lot” is in reference to a quarterback room in 2023 that could feature both Manning and Quinn Ewers. In this case, we would presume the plan would be to have Arch redshirt for his first year at Texas while Ewers plays out his final season in college.

That would allow a potential clean transition at the quarterback position for the Longhorns where Ewers passes Arch the torch at the conclusion of the 2023 season.
Now, this isn’t completely new information. Throughout his recruitment, we heard that Arch was going to be fine with a situation where he has to redshirt for his first year in college.
If redshirting for the 2023 season means that Arch can make a smoother transition into the program and get to know the Sark offensive schemes better, then this is a win-win scenario for Texas.
Moreover, you’d have to figure that this plan was discussed well before Arch announced his commitment to Texas. Ewers gave his commitment to the Longhorns out of the NCAA Transfer Portal more than six months prior to Arch giving his pledge to the 2023 class. Thus, Sark and the Longhorns staff probably had discussions with Arch and his camp regarding the possibilities of redshirting at least six months ago.
Texas is in the process of hauling in a truly elite 2023 recruiting class, spearheaded by Arch. The commitment of Arch back on June 23 sparked an insane run on the recruiting trail for the Longhorns 2023 class that featured the addition of a trio of five-star commits in the span of roughly one week.
