So far this summer, the 2023 Texas football recruiting class is on a tear by more than tripling the number of commits in the mix since early-to-mid June. Texas is now up to 18 commits in the 2023 class, most of which came since June 13.

The real spark, though, for the Longhorns 2023 class for head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff came courtesy of the commitment from the elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning back on June 23. Since landing Arch on June 23, Texas has hauled in a trio of five-star commits which also includes Westgate (LA) safety Derek Williams and DeSoto wide receiver Johntay Cook.

Texas has more than half of the 2023 class filled out ahead of the start of fall camp (Aug. 4). This wave of momentum has accelerated the process for Sark and the Longhorns staff to fill out the 2023 class much faster than originally anticipated this summer.

But the work isn’t done yet on the recruiting trail for Sark and the Longhorns staff heading into the fall. There are still some outstanding recruits remaining uncommitted for the Longhorns at this point of the offseason.

Updating the status of the top priorities for Texas football heading into the fall

With that in mind, here’s a look at three can’t-miss 2023 recruits for the Longhorns to watch ahead of this fall.

Cedric Baxter Jr., RB

Texas has now made the highly touted four-star Edgewater (FL) running back Cedric Baxter Jr. the top target in the 2023 class at this position. With the former Texas commit and elite five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens giving his pledge to the Louisville Cardinals a few weeks ago, the Longhorns went all in on Baxter.

Baxter is set to announce his decision on Aug. 10, which will be one of the most anticipated decisions for the Longhorns ahead of the start of the upcoming regular season.

While the discussion surrounding the top schools in Baxter’s recruitment ahead of his Aug. 10 decision has died down a bit in the last couple of weeks, Texas still sits in a good spot here. Texas and new running backs coach Tashard Choice need to close this one out strong to ensure that Baxter doesn’t get his interest drawn elsewhere.

If Texas can secure a commitment from Baxter next month, that would officially round out the running back recruiting for the 2023 class. That would give Texas commitments from two blue-chip running backs in Baxter and the four-star DeSoto product Tre Wisner.
