Derion Gullette, EDGE/LB

The top edge rusher target remaining on the board for the Longhorns 2023 class at this point of the offseason is the touted four-star Marlin (TX) EDGE/linebacker Derion Gullette. Texas has gone all in on Gullette since the start of the spring, and that seemingly meant a lot to him and his camp.

The constant of the Longhorns’ prioritization and the steady-building relationship has seemingly given Texas the edge in Gullette’s recruitment over his other top schools. Gullette did recently narrow down his top group to three schools, which also include the Texas A&M Aggies and Ohio State Buckeyes.

What we will be watching now in the recruitment of Gullette is the timeline that develops ahead of a potential late summer or early fall decision. Gullette is expected to have a decision in store before the 2022 regular season gets underway. But that timeline is still possible to shift in the next couple of months.

The next major event worth watching on the recruiting timeline for Gullette heading into the fall will be his unofficial visit to College Station to see the Texas A&M Aggies during the final weekend of July. That will be the time when Texas A&M tries to make up as much ground as possible in the race to land a commitment from Gullette.

But considering how Texas holds a pretty considerable lead over Ohio State and Texas A&M among the top schools for Gullette, it’s hard to see the Aggies overcoming much of this gap during his unofficial in a couple of weeks.

This recruitment is Texas’ to lose at this point.
