Quarterback

Starter: Quinn Ewers

Backup: Hudson Card

The looming quarterback competition will command a lot of the attention of the Longhorns faithful in the early stages of fall camp. Redshirt freshman Quinn Ewers will be duking it out with junior Hudson Card to see who will be the starting quarterback for Sark and the Longhorns in Week 1 of the regular season against Louisiana-Monroe.

Most signs ahead of fall camp point to Ewers holding the edge to win the quarterback competition. At least that appears to be the buzz surrounding the college football media landscape this summer.

And it makes sense that Ewers seems to have most of the buzz as the potential starter for the Longhorns this fall. He’s seemingly had a smooth transition into the program and made a positive impression on the staff since spring ball.

Ewers fitting in with this team and showing what he can do throughout spring camp and summer workouts should be enough to give him the edge in this quarterback competition.

The fact of the matter is that Sark and the Longhorns staff didn’t get Ewers out of the transfer portal to plan to have him sit for the first year.

I do still believe that Sark wants to have confidence in his quarterback room heading into fall camp, which is likely why this competition is still open at this point of the offseason. Card’s experience and blue-chip talent will still be good to have in this quarterback room, even if he doesn’t win the starting job for Week 1.

It will also be worth watching what freshman Maalik Murphy is able to do at quarterback in fall camp. He can be overlooked amid the quarterback competition between Ewers and Card this offseason, but he could still challenge to at least get the backup job by season’s end if he shows out in camp.
