Jack end

Starter: Alfred Collins

Backup: Barryn Sorrell

There is all sorts of potential that Texas has among the projected jack end players heading into fall camp this year. Texas has two edge rushers that could be potential game-changers if they can rise to the occasion this fall between junior Alfred Collins and sophomore Barryn Sorrell.

Collins is the logical choice to win the starting job here. And we’ll need to see more out of Collins in order for him to live up to that elusive five-star recruiting ranking he had a few cycles ago. Another year in the system should greatly benefit Collins, though.

Behind Collins at the jack position should be a real talent coming off the edge in Sorrell. Don’t sleep on what Sorrell brings to the table as someone who has put the coaching staff on notice this offseason. I fully expect Sorrell to find himself in a bigger role this year compared to last.

Buck end

Starter: Ovie Oghoufo

Backup: Justice Finkley

Texas will need a lot more out of the play at the buck end position this season than they had last fall. The former Notre Dame Fighting Irish senior linebacker/edge rusher transfer Ovie Oghoufo is likely going to get the starting job at this spot again in 2022.

But there were some struggles that Oghoufo faced both in rushing the passer and finding the ball while defending the run and dropping back into pass coverage last season.

If Oghoufo isn’t able to bolster his production this fall, then the former highly touted four-star recruit and freshman edge rusher Justice Finkley will be waiting in the wings to take some key live-game reps away.
