Texas Football: 2-deep defensive depth chart heading into fall camp
CB1
Starter: D’Shawn Jamison
Backup: Terrance Brooks
Cornerback is another position where the Longhorns will need improved play for the defense to find more success in 2022. Texas had some shortcomings last year at the cornerback position, especially when senior Josh Thompson started having more injury issues arise.
The staple at the cornerback position for the Longhorns this fall will be super senior D’Shawn Jamison. Texas will need Jamison to be more of the playmaker we saw out of him during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He took a bit of a step back in pass defense last fall.
Behind Jamison will be the next man up in terms of a future starting cornerback for the Longhorns in the former Ohio State Buckeyes commit and true freshman Terrance Brooks. I would expect Brooks to get at least 10 or 12 defensive snaps per game this fall as the third corner in this position group.
CB2
Starter: Ryan Watts
Backup: Jaylon Guilbeau OR Jamier Johnson
A new addition out of the transfer portal that I feel will be a seamless fit in this secondary for the Longhorns is the former Ohio State freshman defensive back Ryan Watts. Since he first arrived on campus ahead of spring camp earlier this offseason, Watts got right down to work and made an instant impression on this staff.
Watts is a lengthy and intelligent defensive back in pass coverage that should be able to handle more one-on-one man coverage assignments than the personnel Texas had in the fold for much of last season.
Backing up Watts will either be true freshman Jaylon Guilbeau or sophomore Jamier Johnson. There will likely be a battle that unfolds in fall camp to see who can get the fourth cornerback spot on this depth chart between the likes of Guilbeau, Johnson, and possibly even sophomore Ishmael Ibraheem.
