Candidates: Quinn Ewers, Hudson Card

The position battle that will command the attention of not just the Longhorns faithful, but the entire college football landscape, will come at quarterback in fall camp. Texas will see the likes of the former Ohio State Buckeyes redshirt freshman transfer Quinn Ewers and last year’s Week 1 starter/junior Hudson Card duke it out for the starting job this fall.

There is ever-growing momentum it seems in favor of Ewers to win this starting job early in fall camp. It really looks like Card is facing quite the uphill battle to win this starting job.

In fact, the most realistic path forward for Card to eventually win the starting job this fall would have to come at some point in the non-conference slate or early in Big 12 play. If Ewers is hypothetically struggling as the starter out of the gates this season, then Card might get his shot to take the reigns for this offense.

If Card can take the reigns from Ewers and get a big-time win over a quality opponent such as Alabama, UTSA, and/or the Oklahoma Sooners, then it’s hard to see a world where he isn’t the starting quarterback moving forward. A version of this Texas offense where Card can lead this team to a win over an opponent such as Alabama or Oklahoma is probably as good as it gets.

And if Card can beat those types of opponents, that’s exactly what he needs to do to finally take hold of this starting job.

Yet, that situation taking place probably isn’t the most realistic path that the 2022 season will take to for the Longhorns. Thus, Ewers taking hold of the starting job early in fall camp seems like the most realistic path forward for Sark and the Longhorns.

I keep saying that Texas didn’t get Ewers in the fold out of the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason to come in and sit behind an unproven quarterback such as Card this coming season. If Ewers can show that he’s ready to confidently lead this offense and that his talent can translate this fall, he’s going to be the starter against ULM in the opener.
