Cedric Baxter Jr., RB

One of the biggest remaining targets on the board among uncommitted recruits for the Longhorns 2023 class down the stretch this summer is the highly touted four-star Edgewater (FL) running back Cedric Baxter Jr. After the former Texas commit and five-star El Campo running back committed to the Louisville Cardinals earlier this offseason, the Longhorns shifted their priorities at the position to the Florida native Baxter.

And given that Baxter is now the nation’s top-ranked running back recruit for the 2023 cycle, this looks like a good move by new running backs coach Tashard Choice and the Longhorns to prioritize him over Owens.

A commitment from Baxter would effectively round out running back recruiting in the Longhorns 2023 class heading into the fall. Since Texas also holds a commitment from four-star DeSoto running back Tre Wisner, landing Baxter would give Choice and the Longhorns two quality blue-chips at the position in the 2023 class.

Furthermore, it certainly looks like Texas is trending in the right direction ahead of Baxter’s Aug. 10 decision date. All of the four expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions for Baxter project his commitment to Texas.

The two analyst/reporter forecasts from On3 also hold Baxter as a pretty heavy Texas lean a couple of weeks ahead of his commitment.

Unless the Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, or Texas A&M could make an absolutely massive move in the race to land a commitment from Baxter next month, I imagine Texas will continue to set the pace in this recruitment. It’s hard to see Baxter going anywhere else but Austin following the commitment of Arch and his successful official visit to Texas back on the weekend of June 10.
