This offseason has brought about a lot of hype for the Texas football coaching staff under second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian. This Texas coaching staff has done a seemingly excellent job assembling this roster this offseason and definitely did a fantastic job on the recruiting trail to build out a stellar 2023 class.

But the real question for this staff will come on the field this fall. It looks like Sark and his staff are getting a pass for some of the struggles on the field last season, which resulted in a 5-7 (3-6 Big 12) season that saw them miss out on bowl season for the first time since 2016.

Texas will need to at least eclipse the standard of reaching bowl eligibility while improving in Big 12 play this fall to really keep the pressure off Sark and his staff. Hope is definitely present for this group, though.

Sark and the Longhorns staff kept harping on the improved culture within this program. And if that is the case, this team could reach new heights this coming season in terms of success in the win column.

And with that will come a lot more notoriety for these coaches that are doing nice work laying the foundation for a shift in this program’s outlook for years to come. With that in mind, here’s a look at three Longhorns assistants who could be on the road to be future head coaches.

Tashard Choice, RB coach

Texas has some impressive new hires on the coaching staff this offseason. One of those is the new running backs coach (formerly of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets) Tashard Choice. Sark should be commended thus far for hiring a touted RB coach in Choice.

The way that Choice is recruiting for the Longhorns at the running back position and generating some buzz in the RB room this year speaks of the job he’s doing right away in the wake of Stan Drayton’s departure. But Choice was well on his way to being one of the fast-rising position coaches around college football prior to landing this Texas job.

Choice is a fast-rising name around the football world in general. He has escalated his name very quickly around the college football ranks since he started his journey as an intern with the Dallas Cowboys more than five years ago.

Since that time, Choice has quickly risen from being an offensive analyst with the North Texas Mean Green to getting promoted to running backs coach with the same program. He then would become the running backs coach with his alma mater, Georgia Tech, in 2019.

During his time at Georgia Tech, Choice coached up three all-conference running backs and one eventual All-American in the new Alabama Crimson Tide transfer Jahmyr Gibbs.

Choice was also a great recruiter and developer when he was the director of offensive recruiting while simultaneously holding the running backs coach position with the Yellow Jackets.

At multiple stops now, Choice has proven that he can both recruit and develop talent, at least at running back. His next step will be to prove that he can accomplish this on the scale that Texas presents for him. And then, he might be in line to get a coordinator job before too long.
