Markis Deal, DL
It’s easy to forget about the highly touted four-star Garland-Naaman Forest (TX) defensive lineman Markis Deal at this point of the offseason given his interest at times in the rest of his top group of schools. Throughout most of the summer so far, it looked as if Deal was getting more interest in and from the Georgia Bulldogs, TCU Horned Frogs, and USC.
And while that trio of schools definitely still sits in the top group for Deal heading into the fall, Texas very much remains a player in this recruitment. But this July BBQ visit weekend will be critical for Texas to make up some ground with the other top schools in the race to land a commitment from Deal late this summer.
Moreover, a successful visit weekend for the July BBQ could get Texas in a great position to make a big move with Deal ahead of fall camp. That would also mean that Texas could take the right steps to get Deal on the books for an official visit this fall.
As a side note, I would anticipate that Texas and Georgia could still get officials from Deal for game weekends this fall.
Texas does appear to be trending up in the race to land a commitment from Deal heading into the fall. And while some uncertainty remains concerning his pecking order of top schools at this point of the offseason, it’s clear that Texas is going to continue to push for him despite the defensive line numbers filling up in the 2023 class.
It’s clear by now that Deal still remains a priority for defensive line coach Bo Davis and the Longhorns down the stretch this summer.
