1. West Virginia, Oct. 1 (Austin, TX)

The game that should be circled on the calendar for the Longhorns that is a real potential trap for this team is one that comes on Oct. 1 against head coach Neal Brown and West Virginia.

What makes this game tricky for the Longhorns is the time at which it comes on the schedule. Texas gets West Virginia after the Big 12 opener on the road against Texas Tech, but before the annual Red River Rivalry Game in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl against Oklahoma. If there is one game where the Longhorns could get caught looking ahead, it would likely be for West Virginia the weekend before facing Oklahoma.

Another motivating factor for West Virginia in this game will be the potential hot seat for Brown in his fourth season at the helm in Morgantown. In fact, Brown and Sark could be two of the head coaches around the Big 12 facing the most scrutiny this fall.

Sark and the Longhorns will need to be ready for this one.

And while it is good that the Longhorns get West Virginia at home this year, this is still an opponent that was tricky at times in the last few seasons. West Virginia is 4-3 against Texas in the last seven seasons. That included a one-possession win for West Virginia over Texas last season in Morgantown.

On paper, West Virginia looks like one of the teams in the Big 12 that could be facing an uphill battle this fall. But this West Virginia team has some real potential under Brown this season if the former USC and Georgia transfer quarterback JT Daniels can get going early on leading this offense.
