One of the top targets in the 2023 Texas football recruiting class, the highly touted four-star Woodlawn (LA) cornerback Jordan Matthews, just arrived on campus for the BBQ on July 28. Matthews is one of the many important visitors that head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff are hosting for the July BBQ ahead of this coming weekend.

The difference between Matthews and the bulk of the rest of the visitors for the Texas July BBQ is that he is one of the top remaining uncommitted targets of the 2023 recruiting class. A good portion of the visitors on campus at the moment for Sark and the Longhorns are either committed to Texas already or are targets of future recruiting classes.

This visit to Austin for Matthews could be a critical point in his recruiting timeline given how close he could be to shutting down his recruitment process. It looked as if the plan for Matthews was to get official visits to see Texas and the Alabama Crimson Tide at some point early this fall.

But that timeline could soon be crunching down even further than Matthews shutting down his recruitment in the next couple of months.

A report from Hudson Standish of Horns247 on July 28 (paid content) indicates that there’s a buzz surrounding Matthews that he could move up his decision timeline even earlier than originally anticipated. This report also notes that Matthews has nothing but good things to say about Texas early on in his unofficial visit for the July BBQ.

It also helps that there are so many other highly touted current Texas commits on campus that are also heavily recruiting Matthews. That could clearly have an impact on Matthews as he gets closer and closer to arriving at a decision.

Matthews is definitely one of the most notable remaining priorities for the Longhorns 2023 class, especially among those on the defensive side of the ball. He and five-star Arlington-Martin cornerback Javien Toviano are the top remaining priorities at least among defensive backs for the 2023 class.

Texas currently holds commitments from 20 recruits in the 2023 class. Three of those 20 commits are defensive backs in the Longhorns 2023 class including five-star Westgate (LA) safety Derek Williams, five-star South Oak Cliff cornerback Malik Muhammad, and four-star Arlington-Seguin safety Jamel Johnson.
