3 top 2023 recruits Texas football must land over Texas A&M
Cedric Baxter Jr., RB
The next scheduled commitment worth watching among key targets of the Longhorns 2023 class will come from the highly touted four-star Edgewater (FL) running back Cedric Baxter Jr. on Aug. 10. Baxter could wind up being the highlighting running back commit in the Longhorns 2023 class.
If that winds up coming to fruition in the next couple of weeks, that would give new running backs coach Tashard Choice and Sark a truly loaded 2023 class at the position. Texas also currently holds a commitment from the skilled and powerful four-star DeSoto running back Tre Wisner in the 2023 class.
But there still remains the possibility that Baxter spurns the Longhorns and picks another one of his top schools such as Texas A&M or the Florida Gators.
Although it seems like if Baxter were to stray away from his expected destination, he would likely pick Texas A&M. Fisher and the Aggies are picking up momentum on the recruiting trail in late July, and the threat remains that Baxter’s interest to stray toward College Station.
I will see it’s hard to see Baxter not choosing Texas so close to his scheduled decision, though. He’s a good fit in this Texas offense and most signs point to his commitment landing with the Longhorns. The momentum sat with Texas in the race to land a commitment from Baxter really since he had a successful official visit to Austin back on the weekend of June 10.
It’s also worth noting that Texas could potentially close out their skill position recruiting altogether in the 2023 class if they can land commitments from the likes of Baxter and the highly touted four-star Longview wide receiver Jalen Halen in the next couple of months. Baxter is the last piece to the puzzle for running back recruiting in the 2023 class, and a commitment from Hale could shut down the wide receiver position too.
