As we seemingly saw notable target after notable target of the 2023 Texas football recruiting class announce decisions in the last few days, there is one more potential decision date to add to the calendar for early August. And this could be one that goes Texas’ way at a position of need in the 2023 recruiting class early this month.

A report from Justin Wells of Inside Texas on the morning of Aug. 1 indicates that the highly touted four-star Marlin (TX) edge rusher/linebacker Derion Gullette could be looking at a commitment as soon as later this week. This post on Twitter from Wells of IT indicates that Gullette’s decision date could come on Aug. 5.

This would be big if Texas could seal the deal with a priority recruit in the 2023 class such as Gullette. It would also be the right way for head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff to keep the momentum going on the recruiting trail just after the start of fall camp.

After Texas lost both four-star Austin-Westlake edge rusher Colton Vasek to the Oklahoma Sooners on Aug. 1 and the elite five-star Denton-Ryan linebacker Anthony Hill to the Texas A&M Aggies on July 30, Gullette became an even more important target to the Longhorns 2023 class. In fact, it’s hard to find a more important target of the Longhorns 2023 class along the defensive front that could soon make an announcement.

Texas will be looking to land a commitment from Gullette over the Texas A&M Aggies. And this could come after head coach Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies hosted Gullette on an unofficial visit to College Station over the weekend.

There was some buzz that the Aggies drew over the weekend by getting Gullette to campus after he missed his unofficial visit to Austin earlier in the week.

And that’s where the downside of this looming decision from Gullette comes into play. Texas A&M looks bound to get the last word on an in-person visit with Gullette prior to his potential decision date.

It’s never a good thing for the Longhorns in a battle on the recruiting trail with the Aggies if Fisher and Texas A&M get the last word just a few days before a possible looming decision. The hope here is that Texas did enough to stave off the run that Texas A&M could’ve made at Gullette last weekend to get a decision in their favor later this week.

Texas currently holds commitments from 20 recruits in the 2023 class. At the moment, the lone edge rusher commit in the Longhorns 2023 class is the former Oklahoma State Cowboys pledge and three-star South Oak Cliff product Billy Walton.
