5 most winnable games for Texas football during 2022 season
No. 4: TCU, Nov. 12 (Austin, TX)
ESPN FPI Win Probability: 83.4
Another Big 12 foe that will have a lot of new faces in the mix on the roster and coaching staff in 2022 is the TCU Horned Frogs. Former SMU Mustangs head coach Sonny Dykes is taking over for Gary Patterson (now a Texas special assistant) as the next TCU head coach.
With Patterson in the fold on this Texas staff, I would imagine that TCU should be a very winnable game for the Longhorns. That will help Texas better prepare for TCU this fall. It also helps that TCU was one of the three wins in Big 12 play for Sark and the Longhorns in 2021.
The biggest challenge for Texas in this mid-November battle at home against the Horned Frogs will be the experience factor. TCU returns most of its starters from last season’s team. And they have a lot of proven production on both sides of the ball on the projected two-deep this fall.
TCU also ranks ninth in the FBS in returning production this year.
No. 3: West Virginia, Oct. 1 (Austin, TX)
ESPN FPI Win Probability: 88.5
The West Virginia Mountaineers enter the 2022 season with a head coach on one of the hottest seats in the Power Five in Neal Brown. We will get to see what Brown is able to do this fall with his back up against the wall.
And there will be some intrigue behind this season for Brown and the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers will be led by the former USC and Georgia quarterback transfer JT Daniels in 2022.
West Virginia loses a lot of its production from last year’s team for not having a coaching change. They rank 111th in the FBS in returning production this season.
Texas will be looking to avenge their tough loss to West Virginia on the road from last season. That loss to West Virginia last fall was the final defeat in the six-game losing streak before the finale win over Kansas State.
