The first day of fall practice is now in the books for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program. On Aug. 3, Texas got underway in fall camp, with some real energy buzzing on the Forty Acres early this week.

Sark and the Longhorns staff did get off to a start that was pretty expected, though. There wasn’t anything super robust that happened on the first day of fall practice, but there was still plenty to talk about as we’re now exactly one month from the start of the 2022 regular season.

Texas gave the more experienced players most of the first-team reps at the outset of fall practice on Aug. 3. And while that dynamic will likely shift, at least to some degree in the next few weeks, it left a lot of questions that still need to be answered ahead of the start of the regular season next month.

Top talking points from the first day of fall practice for Texas football

Talking points definitely kicked off on the first day of fall camp and we will continue to see the top storylines for the Longhorns play out in the next couple of weeks. With that in mind, here’s a look at three takeaways from the first day of fall practice for the Longhorns.

DeMarvion Overshown is ready to take a leadership role in this defense

One of the major talking points coming out of the first day of fall practice was the potential improvement and breakthrough in leadership that we could see coming from a few of the players at the linebacker position this fall. And a linebacker that sticks out in this regard is the returning super senior DeMarvion Overshown.

Sark even talked about the emerging leadership of both Overshown and junior Jaylan Ford at the linebacker position at the outset of fall camp. And it certainly sounded like this duo of upperclassmen linebackers looked the part on the first day of fall practice.

But it is Overshown that really sticks out to me as a potential leader that this defense really needs in 2022. Texas didn’t have that aspect of leadership along the defensive front last season. And Overshown certainly has the capability to lead this defense vocally and by example on the field this fall.
