Distribution of first-team reps early in fall camp will look like spring ball

This might come as a surprise to some, but junior quarterback Hudson Card actually took the bulk of the first-team reps on the first day of fall practice over redshirt freshman Quinn Ewers.

Despite some of the chatter that Ewers would start taking hold of the quarterback competition out of the gates in fall camp, Card got to take the reigns from the get-go as the more experienced of these two signal-callers.

Yet, I would expect this dynamic to shift throughout fall camp, depending on the performances and confidence we see from both Card and Ewers on the field as practice moves along in the next couple of weeks. Especially if Ewers starts to gain the confidence of the staff in the next week or so, I would expect one quarterback to consistently get the bulk of the first-team reps.

On the first day of fall practice, Ewers and Card both got to throw to the ones and twos at the skill positions on a regular basis. And that will likely be the case for the rest of the first week of fall practice in the next few days.

And from what we heard coming out of the first day of fall practice, Ewers and Card both had their fair share of ups and downs going through reps. But it also sounds like both displayed some heightened confidence in the downfield throws they made on this day.

All in all, I still anticipate Ewers to be named the Week 1 starter against Louisiana-Monroe on Sep. 3 when Sark announces the winner of the quarterback competition in the coming weeks. But Sark continues to show that he remains committed to letting this quarterback competition play out even through the early stages of fall practice.
