Jordan Matthews, CB

The latest key target of the Longhorns 2023 class to set a commitment date was the touted four-star Woodlawn (LA) cornerback Jordan Matthews. Late in the morning of Aug. 4, Matthews announced his group of top three schools and his Aug. 15 commitment date.

Texas was included with the Michigan Wolverines and Tennessee Volunteers in the top group of schools that Matthews will boil his final decision down to ahead of Aug. 15.

There were some big late pushes that Michigan and Tennessee made, respectively, during Matthews’ summer trips back in June. It did look as if Michigan and Tennessee both made strong impressions on Matthews and his camp during those respective official visits a couple of months ago.

The question here will be whether the smoke coming from Tennessee or Michigan is enough to unseat Texas as the presumed frontrunner in the race to land Matthews’ commitment. But I would anticipate that it’s a very good sign for cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph and the Longhorns that Matthews set a commitment date roughly one week after he had a successful unofficial visit to Austin for the July Texas BBQ/pool party back on July 28.

Texas is still the pick for most in the recruiting industry a couple of weeks ahead of his decision date. There’s not enough to convince me that Matthews is going to spurn Texas and commit to either Michigan or Tennessee.

Joseph and the Longhorns staff looked to have formed the best and longest-lasting connection with Matthews and his camp. That is what gives Texas the edge here.
