Elite supporting cast

Among the bigger downfalls for the Texas offense at times last season was a lack of an effective supporting cast across the board on this side of the ball. That was especially the case in the receiving corps when Jordan Whittington wasn’t healthy. When Whittington was missing for the Texas receiving corps, the only effective and consistent option Texas had in the passing game was a true freshman in Xavier Worthy.

That allowed opposing defenses to solely focus on locking down Worthy in the passing game week-over-week.

Texas also faced a major issue last season along the offensive line. Last year, Texas had one of the least effective offensive lines in pass protection in the Big 12.

Both of those narratives will begin to shift this fall. Texas has added a lot of talent and depth along the offensive line thanks to the 2022 recruiting class, highlighted by key five-star signees in IOL Devon Campbell and offensive tackle Kelvin Banks.

And Texas was able load up at wide receiver in a way that we haven’t seen on the Forty Acres at least since the 2000s. Texas added the likes of the former Wyoming Cowboys stud wideout Isaiah Neyor, Iowa State grad transfer Tarique Milton, Alabama tight end Jahleel Billingsley, Alabama wideout Agiye Hall, etc.

It goes without saying that Texas is loaded this year in the backfield and at wide receiver. That should give Ewers more than enough weapons to work with to find a good rhythm in the passing game this fall.

When Ewers is throwing to the likes of Worthy, Whittington, Neyor, Billingsley, Ja’Tavion Sanders, Bijan Robinson, etc. he should have a very high floor in terms of his production in the passing game this season.

Combine the raw talent that Ewers brings to the table along with the caliber of the skill position players for Texas and you could get a situation that surfaces a true Heisman contender at quarterback.
