Savion Red, WR

It’s really hard to talk about impactful true freshmen among the newcomers for the Longhorns early on in fall camp without having Savion Red‘s name pop up. The former under-the-radar three-star recruit and Grand Prairie, TX, product Red is clearly making an impact on the Longhorns in the early stages of practice.

The main area where Red is making a big splash for the Longhorns early in fall camp is on special teams. In fact, special teams coordinator/tight ends coach made a surprising move by having Red field a good portion of the first-team reps in the return game this week in practice.

With how many weapons the Longhorns have in the return game, Red getting to field punt and kick returns with the first-teamers speaks for itself.

It sounds like Red could be one of the go-to options for Texas returning punts heading into the regular season. Meanwhile, I would still anticipate that Jamison and Thompson are mixed in both punt and kick returns thanks to their explosiveness and open-field speed.

What will be interesting to watch in the next couple of weeks in practice is if Red is worked in more often at the skill positions on offense. At the moment, he’s getting just limited reps behind the first and second-teamers in wide receiver drills. But it sounds like he’s got good hands and excellent playmaking ability once he’s got the ball in his hands.

You would think that type of skill set that Red is putting on display this fall would warrant at least getting him some looks with the second and third-teamers.

It already looks as if Red was one of the hidden gems that the Longhorns signed in the 2022 class. The short-area quickness, field vision, reliable hands, and underrated open-field speed that Red brings to the table are already coming to the forefront in the early stages of fall camp.
