Cedric Baxter Jr., RB

At the moment, it feels like the highest priority among targets of the Longhorns 2023 class with scheduled decision dates is the talented and potent four-star Edgewater (FL) running back Cedric Baxter Jr. Texas looks to be the frontrunner at the moment in the race to land a commitment from Baxter, who is set to announce on Aug. 10.

Texas currently holds a commitment from four-star DeSoto running back Tre Wisner in the 2023 class. If the Longhorns land a commitment from Baxter next week, that would likely round out the recruiting at the position in the 2023 class for new running backs coach Tashard Choice and this staff.

It’s hard to envision having a much more successful 2023 class at the running back position than by landing both Baxter and Wisner.

However, this decision will come down to Texas along with the Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, and Texas A&M. A recent wave of momentum on the recruiting trail from new head coach Billy Napier and the Gators could’ve certainly caught Baxter’s attention. But I don’t think that Florida recruiting momentum of late is something that moves the needle to the degree needed to overtake Texas as the leader for Baxter.

All four of these schools are making big pushes for the running back that some services have rated as the No. 1 prospect at the position in the nation for this cycle. But this one really feels like its Texas’ to lose.

With Baxter’s decision pegged for Aug. 10, I would bet that he is actually the next commit to join the Longhorns 2023 class after Gullette.
