Jordan Matthews, CB
The likeliest cornerback commit for the Longhorns 2023 class in the near future is the touted four-star Woodlawn (LA) product Jordan Matthews. Texas does look to have a lead over the other top schools in the race to land a commitment from Matthews ahead of his Aug. 15 decision date.
Matthews took to social media on Aug. 4 to announce his top three schools and his Aug. 15 commitment date. The other schools amid his top three along with Texas are the Michigan Wolverines and Tennessee Volunteers.
While there is still a chance that Michigan or Tennessee moved the needle enough with Matthews to pull off a real shocker and land a commitment from him over the Longhorns.
The odds on that actually coming to fruition seems slim at best, though.
In fact, of the three targets of the Longhorns 2023 class on this list with set decision dates, I am the most confident that Texas will land a commitment from Matthews. Cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph has a great relationship with Matthews and his camp. That long-lasting relationship will likely pay dividends for the Longhorns in the very near future.
If Texas lands a commitment from Matthews, that likely wouldn’t mean that this staff is done recruiting at the cornerback position. That would still leave the elite five-star Arlington-Martin cornerback Javien Toviano on the board for Joseph and the Longhorns staff. If Texas can land both Toviano and Matthews heading into the fall, that would be a perfect way to round up the DB recruiting in the 2023 class.
