Wesley Yates, SG

One of the first 2023 targets on the radar for Beard and his staff since he took over as the Texas head coach last offseason is the five-star Beaumont United shooting guard Wesley Yates. Texas offered Yates back in June 2021, which cultivated this relationship pretty early on for Beard and his staff.

Texas has started to get some real traction with Yates this summer. In fact, Yates was just on campus for an unofficial visit to Austin back on Aug. 4. This was the first unofficial visit for Yates to Austin since he was offered last summer.

And it looks like Texas could be in line to get another visit from Yates unofficially before announcing his commitment soon.

Depending on how the decision timeline shakes out for Yates in the next couple of months, Texas could be a fast riser among the top schools in the race to land his commitment. Some of the other schools to watch include the Stanford Cardinal, LSU Tigers, Washington Huskies, and Auburn Tigers.

Although, it does appear that there is a lot of momentum right now in the race to land a commitment from Yates with LSU and Stanford. I also wouldn’t rule out the Gonzaga Bulldogs down the stretch this summer.

This talented in-state product Yates could be a difference-maker for this Texas offense as he is a true bucket-getter that can light up opposing defenses with his efficient shooting ability from deep and explosive drive to the hoop. Yates would add a different dimension to the Texas offense via the 2023 class if Beard and new assistant Brandon Chappell can close the deal in this recruitment in the near future.
