3 Texas football players with stock on the rise in fall practice
Now more than one week into fall camp for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program, various position battles are beginning to play out in practice ahead of the regular season opener. Texas still doesn’t have any critical starters named among the key position battles in fall practice, but it feels like that time is coming to start configuring the two-deep depth chart.
That is especially the case with Sark and the Longhorns staff prepping for the first fall scrimmage this weekend. After getting full pads on for the first time in practice on Aug. 9, the Longhorns are now readying up for the first fall scrimmage. That looks to be a time when some key position battles can continue to make some headway.
With the first fall scrimmage just around the corner, it will be interesting to see which Longhorns players continue to have their stock trending up or down in the next few days. But most of the attention at the moment will be falling on the players rising up the depth chart fast in fall camp.
Texas football players with stock trending up after the first week of fall camp
With that in mind, here’s a look at three Longhorns players with their stock on the rise in the early stages of fall practice.
Savion Red, WR
It’s looking like the real gem find among non-blue-chip signees in the Longhorns 2022 recruiting class is the Grand Prairie product and true freshman wide receiver Savion Red. As one of the late additions to the Longhorns 2022 class, Red was maybe the late flip that will have the biggest immediate impact on this team among non-blue-chip recruits.
Between mentions from his fellow players and the coaches, Red is clearly making a big impression early in fall camp. In fact, he appears to be making such a positive impression that he could earn some key live-game reps early in the season.
That especially looks to be the case with the number of first-team reps Red is apparently getting in the return game so far in fall practice. Red is definitely making waves in terms of his ability to pose a threat as part of the special teams unit.
Moreover, we’ve heard rave reviews about Red’s game from the redshirt junior wide receiver Jordan Whittington along with Sark on multiple occasions. Notoriety like that is definitely something major for Red this early in fall camp.
If Red continues charting the course he has of late, I would fully anticipate him to be one of the returners that special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks calls upon frequently this fall. And if he keeps making the type of impression he has early on through the rest of fall camp, there’s a chance that Red could start moving his way up onto the two-deep at slot receiver by the end of the upcoming season.
