Cole Hutson, IOL

We all know heading into fall camp that this insanely highly touted freshman class of offensive linemen were going to make an impact for Texas in the trenches during the 2022 season. What we didn’t know was the degree to which they would make an impact out of the gates during the regular season.

The more and more we hear as fall camp progresses, the more and more it looks like there will be a sizable impact that these first-year offensive linemen make out of the gates this season. And one name to really pay attention to at this point of fall camp in the trenches is the former four-star recruit and freshman interior offensive lineman Cole Hutson.

Texas and offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood look to have found a good one in the 2022 recruiting class in Hutson. As the lone 2022 signee among this special group of offensive linemen to enroll early, it really does look like Hutson got a big leg up on the competition in spring ball.

In fact, the impact that Hutson had on this offensive line thanks to him enrolling early and participating in spring camps seems to be one of the major reasons why he’s now getting some looks with the first-team O-Line this week.

One of the major developments in this week of fall practice was the move for Hutson to get at least occasional reps with the first-team offensive line at center. Both Hutson and senior IOL Junior Angilau have actually received some of the first-team reps at center in fall practice this week ahead of the presumed starter and sophomore Jake Majors.

All in all, it wouldn’t surprise me all that much if both Hutson and freshman offensive tackle Kelvin Banks wind up getting starting reps in the trenches at some point early on in the regular season. Texas has issues at the offensive tackle position, and Flood and the Longhorns likely want more size on the interior. Starting Hutson and Banks would make sense to potentially accomplish those goals for Flood and the Longhorns at some point this season.
