3 Texas football players to watch during first fall scrimmage this weekend
Quinn Ewers, QB
Who else would it be topping the list of the Longhorns players to watch in the first fall scrimmage?
The former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback and Southlake Carroll High School product Quinn Ewers will be looking to prove some of the strides he’s made in summer workouts and spring camp by having a solid showing in the first scrimmage this weekend. If he does show out in the scrimmage this weekend, that could be enough to give Ewers a sustained edge in the quarterback competition over junior Hudson Card.
In fact, it’s not out of the question that Ewers does enough this weekend to get Sark to consider naming him the Week 1 starting quarterback as soon as next week. But we would have to see Ewers have a truly spectacular showing in the scrimmage on Aug. 13 for this to come to fruition in all likelihood.
The two progressions we’ll be watching for Ewers coming out of the first fall scrimmage this weekend are managing turnovers and improving his pocket awareness. If Ewers can put some improved footwork and decision-making on display this weekend, that would be a big step in the right direction in this quarterback competition.
It still sounds like Ewers is at least the slight favorite in the quarterback battle from the discussions circling around Texas fall practice. But this isn’t a done deal for Ewers to be named the starting quarterback before the second scrimmage. He’ll need to prove himself on the practice field this weekend to move closer to ensuring he’ll be the starter by next week.
