Texas basketball books OV with 5-Star SG Wesley Yates

Notable news arrived for head coach Chris Beard and his staff for a top target of the 2023 Texas basketball recruiting class this weekend. According to a report from Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas on Aug. 13 (paid content), Texas has secured an official visit with the elite five-star Beaumont United (TX) shooting guard Wesley Yates.

This official visit that the Longhorns scheduled with Yates to Austin is on the books for Sep. 3. That will come on the same weekend that Beard and the Longhorns staff are also set to host five-star Duncanville power forward Ron Holland for an official visit.

Yates’ Sep. 3 official visit to Austin to see Texas will be his first trip to see the Longhorns will be the second OV that he currently has on the books for September. He’s also set to officially visit Baton Rouge to see the LSU Tigers the following weekend (specifically on Sep. 10).

Yates also unofficially visited Texas recently. He was on campus in Austin for an unofficial visit on Aug. 4. That Aug. 4 unofficial visit to Austin was Yates’ first to see the Longhorns.

Moreover, getting Yates on the books for an official visit was one of a couple of big-time nuggets in his recruitment this weekend. Texas was also included in the top group of nine schools that Yates announced on social media early in the afternoon of Aug. 13.

The other schools included in his top nine that he announced on Twitter on Aug. 13 are the Gonzaga Bulldogs, Stanford Cardinal, Washington Huskies, Houston Cougars, Arkansas Razorbacks, LSU, Auburn Tigers, and Baylor Bears.

Texas is currently without a commitment in the 2023 class as of the night of Aug. 13. But that Sep. 3 weekend is shaping up to be a big one for the Longhorns, with the trio of Yates, Holland, and four-star Carmichael-Jesuit (CA) small forward Andrej Stojakovic all set to officially visit Texas.
