Injury news dominated the headlines for the Texas football program coming out of the first scrimmage of fall camp over the weekend. On Aug. 13, Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian took part in the first fall scrimmage, which wound up seeing plenty of injuries come about.

The two biggest injuries that came out of the weekend were season-ending ACL tears to the likes of redshirt sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Neyor and senior interior offensive lineman Junior Angilau. Neyor suffered a non-contact injury that wound up being the worst-case scenario.

And it sounds like Angilau’s knee injury involved at least some contact in the trenches.

Losing both Neyor and Angilau will obviously be extremely costly for the Longhorns this season. But Sark and his staff need to find a way to get this team ready with a “next man up” mantra that can see the depth take center stage.

Sark confirmed the reports that surfaced on Aug. 14 that Neyor and Angilau would both miss the entirety of the 2022 season during his Monday press conference on Aug. 15. But that wasn’t it for the injury news and updates provided by Sark during his press conference early this week.

More injury updates to key Texas football players after first fall scrimmage

With that in mind, here’s a look at three more key injuries for the Longhorns worth noting a few weeks ahead of the regular season opener.

Jahdae Barron, DB

Among the surprising injury reports coming out of the weekend had to do with junior defensive back Jahdae Barron missing from the scrimmage. Barron appears to be dealing with a lower-body injury issue, which kept him out of the scrimmage on Aug. 13 at the star position.

Yet, it doesn’t sound like Barron will be out for all that long. Sark affirmed that Barron was in the midst of the players that could be back anywhere between a few days to a couple of weeks. That’s good news, especially if Barron can return for the latter stretch of fall camp and be ready for the regular season opener on Sep. 3.

Due to Barron’s absence in the scrimmage last weekend, true freshman defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau got the bulk of the first-team reps at the star position. That actually could turn out to be a good thing for the Longhorns since Guilbeau looked the part in the first scrimmage.

We should continue to see Guilbeau getting the bulk of the first-team reps at the star position with Barron likely out for the open practice on Aug. 16.

All in all, it sounds like Barron is being held out for at least a week as a precautionary measure, and that he should be good to go for the start of the regular season. He is a key part of this secondary, so getting him back for the opener is critical.
