Cole Hutson, IOL

Maybe the most surprising injury news coming out of the weekend was with true freshman interior offensive lineman and early enrollee Cole Hutson. The former four-star recruit was mentioned as one of the Longhorns players that got banged up during the scrimmage over the weekend and will miss some time likely at least for the next week or so.

There is good news with Hutson too since Sark mentioned him as one of the players that should be ready for the regular season opener. Given the loss of another key interior offensive linemen for the season in Angilau, having Hutson back in the mix for offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood will be key.

Flood and the Longhorns were starting to give Hutson some looks with the first and second-team offensive line in the last week, prior to him undergoing this recent injury. In fact, it sounded like Hutson was one of the multiple talented true freshman offensive linemen pushing to get starting reps early this season.

The loss of Hutson for at least a few more days in fall camp is a detriment to Flood, as he tries to mix and match different OL combinations in the wake of the loss of Angilau for the season. But it shouldn’t be too much of a setback to the Texas staff or Hutson himself if he’s able to continue making some of the necessary strides to get early reps this season upon his return to fall practice.
