3 most overrated teams on Texas football’s 2022 schedule
West Virginia (Oct. 1)
The West Virginia Mountaineers tend to stick out as an opponent on the Longhorns 2022 schedule for two reasons.
First and foremost, the addition of the former Georgia Bulldogs and USC Trojans transfer quarterback JT Daniels has escalated some of the hype surrounding West Virginia heading into the season. Daniels was a mid-offseason addition out of the NCAA Transfer Portal for head coach Neal Brown and the Mountaineers.
And at his best, Daniels would certainly be one of the very best quarterbacks in the Big 12 this fall. But we’ll touch more on the skepticism surrounding Daniels in a bit.
The second reason why West Virginia sticks out as a tough opponent for the Longhorns this season is the fact that the Mountaineers got the best of them last year in Morgantown. Texas was riddled with injuries in that game, leading to a loss to West Virginia by a score of 31-23.
Yet, there are flaws with each of these reasons why Texas fans might be concerned about West Virginia this fall. First off, Daniels has never put together a full season of solid production as a starting quarterback between his four years playing for Georgia and USC. His past inconsistencies leave some lingering doubt as to how he can lead West Virginia at the quarterback position in 2022.
It’s also worth noting that Texas should be in a much more advantageous spot against West Virginia compared to last season. When Texas faced West Virginia last year, they were in the midst of a six-game downfall in Big 12 play. It didn’t help either that West Virginia faced Texas in Morgantown.
Yet, Texas will get West Virginia at home this season. Texas should also have the quarterback position figured out by this point of the season, which is not something they could say in this late-November loss to the Mountaineers last fall.
