Oklahoma State (Oct. 22)

Another highly-ranked team in the Big 12 heading into the regular season that I believe is a bit overhyped (at least compared to their spot in the major preseason polls) is the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Head coach Mike Gundy and the Pokes hold the No. 12 slot in the preseason AP Poll and No. 11 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

That is the highest ranking in the major preseason polls for Gundy and the Pokes since 2017 when they were slotted at No. 10 in the preseason AP Poll.

As is the case with Baylor, though, I do believe that there are some indications that Oklahoma State could at least be a little bit overrated heading into the regular season. There are some sizable discrepancies in the case of the Pokes in some of the preseason metrics to their lofty preseason AP Poll ranking, similar to that of the Bears.

  • SP+: 32
  • FPI: 14
  • Returning production: 118

Oklahoma State lost a lot of talent and production on both sides of the ball this offseason, including senior running back Jaylen Warren, senior wide receiver Tay Martin, redshirt senior linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, and senior cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse, among a few others. In fact, Oklahoma State lost nine All-Big 12 performers from last season’s team.

And when you factor in Gundy and the Pokes losing a revelation of a defensive coordinator in Jim Knowles to the Ohio State Buckeyes, you get a team with some questions to answer heading into the season.

All in all, Texas is likely one Jason Taylor pick-six from last season away from having an undefeated record in three tries against Gundy, quarterback Spencer Sanders, and the Pokes, going back to 2019.
