4 pleasant surprises for Texas football in first half of fall camp
Jonathon Brooks, RB
Despite losing senior running back Roschon Johnson to a high ankle sprain during the first fall scrimmage last weekend, there is still plenty of depth that Texas boasts at the position. And one of the reasons why Texas’ depth in the running back room this year inspires so much confidence is the rise of the former Hallettsville two-way star and sophomore Jonathon Brooks.
It’s also worth noting that Sark announced during his Monday press conference this week that Roschon should be ready for the regular season opener. Granted, we’ll see how quickly Roschon is actually able to work back at least close to full health with how stingy some high ankle sprains turn out to be.
Moreover, Brooks has shined so far in fall camp, even getting some of the second-team reps at running back with Roschon sidelined at the moment.
It looks like Brooks could wind up being the second or third running back in the pecking order for Sark, new running backs coach Tashard Choice, and the Longhorns this fall. Brooks proved last year that he is more than capable of being a very efficient back each time he touches the ball. In fact, he ranked second on the team last season in yards per carry, with 6.8.
Brooks’ cutting ability and refusal to go down after initial contact is starting to come to the forefront this fall. He’s going to be a really solid change of pace back that also has a very bright future with this running back room this year and beyond.
