Texas football commit Johntay Cook cracks top 30 in prospect rankings
Big news arrived this week for one of the top commits in the 2023 Texas football recruiting class. The elite five-star DeSoto wide receiver and summer Texas commit Johntay Cook got a nice ratings bump in the latest update from 247Sports.
The latest refresh of the 247Sports Composite prospect rankings for the 2023 cycle now has Cook cracking the top 30 high school recruits in the nation. He also is ranked as the fifth best 2023 high school wide receiver prospect and the fifth best recruit out of Texas.
This probably has a lot to do with recent ranking updates from ESPN and Rivals, which both saw Cook move into the top 35 among 2023 recruits. ESPN ranks Cook as the No. 32 2023 recruit and Rivals has him at No. 27.
5-Star Texas football WR commit Johntay Cook cracks top 30 in latest 247Sports Composite update
It’s not necessarily the true 247Sports ranking that helped Cook much in this latest composite update. Of the major recruiting services, 247Sports ranks Cook the second-lowest.
Moreover, Cook cracking the top 30 of the 2023 247Sports Composite rankings means that the Longhorns now have two commits in this class in this group. It is both Cook and the elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning that rank inside the top 30 of the 247Sports Composite rankings after the latest refresh.
Arch still holds the top spot in the 247Sports Composite rankings and the true 247Sports ranking. In fact, ESPN is the only major recruiting service that doesn’t have Arch ranked as the unanimous No. 1 2023 recruit in the country. ESPN does still have Arch at No. 2, though.
The other five-star commit that the Longhorns have in the 2023 class, according to the latest 247Sports Composite ranking update, is Westgate (LA) safety Derek Williams. While Williams cracks the top 35 (at No. 34), he still sits on the outside looking in to get in the same group as Cook and Manning.
Texas currently holds commitments from 22 recruits in the 2023 class as of the afternoon of Aug. 18. According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2023 Texas recruiting class now ranks at No. 2 in the nation and in the top spot in the Big 12.
