Ovie Oghoufo, LB/EDGE

If there was one Longhorns player on this list that was likely a projected starter at his position heading into fall camp, it was the former Notre Dame Fighting Irish transfer and senior linebacker/edge rusher Ovie Oghoufo. The problem that Oghoufo faced throughout fall practice so far, though, was the challenges from other potential edge rushers for first-team reps.

There are multiple options that PK and the Longhorns’ defensive staff are looking at to try and drum up a more effective pass rush this fall. And that might come at a cost of Oghoufo getting a lot of the reps at sam linebacker.

Yet, we’ve heard a lot of good things regarding Oghoufo’s performance in camp in the last week or so.

The improvements we’ve heard about regarding Oghoufo’s game in fall camp of late include better approaches when defending the run and even more explosiveness off the edge when getting after the quarterback. Oghoufo was already pretty quick off the edge, but adding even more explosiveness isn’t something anyone will argue with.

Missed tackles were a huge issue for Oghoufo last season. But if he can clean that part of his game up, he could be a huge contributor along this front seven this season. The final piece to the puzzle here would be Oghoufo wreaking more havoc when rushing the passer, which is much needed for Texas this fall at the sam linebacker position.
