For the second time in fall camp, Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian wrapped up a fall scrimmage that helped clarify how the two-deep depth chart will play out for the upcoming regular season. Texas took part in the second scrimmage of fall camp on Aug. 20, and it sounds like this one went better than the first on the weekend prior.

Sark and the Longhorns had a multitude of position battles seemingly either figured out or at least somewhat cleared up heading into this second fall scrimmage last weekend.

Thus, Texas fans should come out of this scrimmage feeling pretty good about where things stand with this team on both sides of the ball. There are still some looming question marks on the defensive side of the ball for the Longhorns heading into the season. But the offense had a much better day, especially among the first-teamers, on Aug. 20.

Newcomers for Texas football making positive impressions in fall camp so far

As the Longhorns get set for the final week of fall practice before game prep begins ahead of the regular season opener, who is standing out from the first few weeks of camp? Here’s a look at three Longhorns newcomers standing out thus far in fall camp.

Honorable mentions

Kelvin Banks, OT

Likely the true freshman offensive lineman for the Longhorns this fall that has the most potential to be a standout contributor right away is the former elite five-star recruit and offensive tackle Kelvin Banks. Texas and offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood have their starting left tackle in Banks.

As fall camp continues to progress, Banks is looking more and more comfortable, especially in pass protection. Flood and the Longhorns will keep looking to him to set the tone for this talented group of freshman offensive linemen throughout the season.

Cole Hutson, IOL

One of the better finds among the true freshmen offensive linemen for Flood and the Longhorns from the 2022 recruiting class was the former blue-chip prospect and touted interior offensive lineman Cole Hutson. Texas found a good one that is making a real impression blocking for the run and in pass protection in the 6-foot-5 and 305-pound Hutson.

There’s not a doubt in my mind that Hutson has done enough since spring ball to lock up a spot on the two-deep at one of the offensive guard spots. And in all likelihood, Hutson is set to be one of the starting guards heading into the regular season.

Savion Red, WR

Another one of the real solid finds for the Longhorns staff in the 2022 recruiting class that is sticking out right away in fall camp is the former underrated three-star prospect and true freshman wide receiver Savion Red. Texas is getting Red involved on multiple sides of the ball in camp, namely at slot receiver and as a punt returner.

We’re getting to see Red getting plenty of reps in both spots out of the gates this season. He’s earned his reps in a very timeframe, making a big impression on this staff in the last few weeks.
