The quarterback room is already crowded with a lot of talented players this year. And it’s only going to get more crowded in the near future.

That will make it difficult for the former Iowa State Cyclones commit and Austin High product Charles Wright to ever compete for any sort of significant live-game reps at the quarterback position. Thus, if Wright wants to compete for a starting job at any point in his collegiate career, his best option at the moment might be to test the waters in the transfer portal.

Heading into the 2022 season, the top three quarterbacks (in order from top-to-bottom) are redshirt freshman Quinn Ewers, junior Hudson Card, and true freshman Maalik Murphy. And Texas has the elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback commit Arch Manning on the way to the Forty Acres as part of the 2023 recruiting class.

The only career college snaps that Wright has under his belt came in Texas’ dominant win last season over the Texas Tech Red Raiders. And he only got six offensive snaps in that win over Texas Tech last year.

For Wright to get reps this fall, there would probably have to be some injuries that overtook the three quarterbacks in front of him in this room.

Wright did stick it out up to this point, which might be an indication that he wants to be in Austin no matter what. That does make sense given how he is an Austin native that is close to home, which is a factor that a lot of other quarterbacks don’t have when making this sort of hypothetical decision.
