Running back

Starter: Bijan Robinson

Backup: Roschon Johnson

The running back position is set for the Longhorns this fall with star junior Bijan Robinson leading the way along with senior leader Roschon Johnson. Texas has insane depth in the running back room this year, which is highlighted by the trio of talented rushers that new RB coach has on hand behind Bijan and Roschon. This trio is made up of redshirt junior Keilan Robinson, sophomore Jonathon Brooks, and true freshman Jaydon Blue.

We’ll start off the running back portion of the depth chart with the focus on the Heisman contender and preseason All-American Bijan. The projected 2023 first-round NFL Draft pick will likely be what Sark leans on to set the tone for the offense this fall with a redshirt freshman set to start at quarterback.

Bijan was stellar in the ground game and as a receiver last season. He is going to be utilized frequently this fall on screen plays, motions out to the slot as a receiver, and on wheel routes that can get him out in space.

But where Bijan is going to do most of his damage comes in the zone-run game. If Texas can set the edge effectively for Bijan this season, that outside zone run game should come to life in ways we didn’t see down the stretch last year.

Moreover, Texas will hopefully have Roschon back in the fold healthy after suffering a high-ankle sprain in the first fall scrimmage a couple of weekends ago. If he’s healthy for the opener, he should serve as the primary backup.

If Roschon isn’t 100 percent, Brooks should be the backup with Keilan getting some significant reps as a special-use skill back on run and pass plays. Blue could serve a similar role as Keilan does with fewer reps this fall.
