Quarterback

Starter: Quinn Ewers

Backup: Hudson Card

The position battle that all Longhorns fans were waiting to see play out this fall was obviously at quarterback. And we got our answer last week as to who would be the starting quarterback for the regular season opener vs. ULM, and it will be redshirt freshman Quinn Ewers.

Ewers was the quarterback we thought for nearly the entire offseason that would be the starter. But some late rumors and reports concerning junior quarterback Hudson Card led many to believe (myself included) that Ewers might not be the Week 1 starter after all.

Yet, here we are with the quarterback that could usher this Texas offense into a new era of success. The former perfect-rated recruit and Southlake Carroll High School product has all the arm talent in the world. Ewers just needs to put it together without making too many costly mistakes in the form of interceptions and bad fumbles this fall.

It sounds like Sark is ready to ride with Ewers as the quarterback getting all the reps at the position against ULM potentially regardless of how much Texas is winning by. But we’ll see if that holds true if the Longhorns have a massive second-half lead on ULM next weekend.

Ewers has the keys to the offense and will probably have a longer leash as the starter than Card did with Casey Thompson waiting in the wings early last season.

Sark has noted in the last few days that Card will still play an important role for the Longhorns this fall. He still needs to be ready to be thrown into key live-game situations if anything were to happen to Ewers this season.
