3 former Texas football players to watch in Week 0
Casey Thompson, QB
The most notable Texas transfer that is set to compete in Week 0 this season is the former Longhorns starting quarterback and redshirt junior Casey Thompson. That meant Texas got one of the quarterbacks from last season’s squad back this fall and lost one to the transfer portal.
As soon as Sark and the Longhorns landed a commitment out of the portal from the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman Ewers, it looked like Thompson was officially out the door. Thompson transferred from Texas to Nebraska, where he will be linking up with another former Longhorn in Washington.
It was pretty clear since spring ball that Frost and the Huskers were planning on naming Thompson as QB1 for the regular season. Thompson got right to work with Nebraska and looks prepared for the big-time conference opener this weekend in Ireland against Northwestern.
Texas fans will likely be watching how Thompson performs with this Nebraska offense that had its fair share of struggles in the last few seasons. If Thompson can take this offense to new heights this fall, it will also be interesting to see how that ultimately reflects on Sark.
Yet, I would anticipate that Thompson could have a pretty solid season for Nebraska if he stays healthy throughout. Thompson was good for the Longhorns prior to suffering the thumb injury he battled through in Big 12 play last season.
It surely looks like Thompson has plenty of confidence leading the Huskers’ offense into this key regular season opener on Aug. 27 against head coach Pat Fitzgerald and Northwestern.
