A topic that is coming to the forefront of late concerning the 2023 Texas football recruiting class has to do with any potential flips that head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff could bring into the fold, or that they could lose this fall. Texas has yet to see much take place in the way of de-commitments or losing recruits to another school in the 2023 cycle thus far.

In fact, the lone de-commitment for Sark and the Longhorns staff in the 2023 class to date is the five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens, who is now pledged to the Louisville Cardinals.

Moreover, one commit that it sounds like Texas is firm on right now is the highly touted four-star Houston-C.E. King defensive lineman Dylan Spencer. As one of the first commits in the mix in the Longhorns 2023 class, some fans might’ve questioned the status of Spencer’s pledge to Texas heading into the fall.

Yet, a report from Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas on Aug. 25 (paid content) reaffirms that Spencer is “one-hundred percent Texas” heading into the fall.

Getting this confirmation that Spencer is essentially locked in with the Longhorns 2023 class is big for this staff with a few months remaining before the first signing day. Spencer is a building block along the defensive line for this 2023 class, and his staying solid with this staff takes one more concern away as the 2022 season approaches.

Texas football DL coach Bo Davis a driving force to the locked-in commitment of 4-Star Dylan Spencer

It’s also good to hear that the strong relationship that Spencer has with defensive line coach Bo Davis is a driving factor in his firm commitment to the Longhorns this fall. Davis continues to do good work on the recruiting trail, and this strong relationship with Spencer and his camp is further proof of that.

This shows that Davis is able to connect with key recruits in other ways than just their fit with the program on the field. He’s showing the value that the connections with the coaching staff and everything else that the University of Texas brings to the table for these prospective recruits.

Texas currently holds commitments from 22 recruits in the 2023 class as of the morning of Aug. 25. Spencer is one of two defensive line commits in the 2023 class at the moment, along with the touted four-star Bergen Catholic (NJ) product Sydir Mitchell.
