The first commitment in more than six months arrived for head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff in the 2024 Texas football recruiting class on the afternoon of Sep. 2. Texas landed a surprise commitment heading into the weekend from the highly touted and versatile four-star Houston Clear Lake athlete/wide receiver Hunter Moddon.

Moddon is the third commitment in the Longhorns 2024 class. The other two commits in the 2024 class for the Longhorns are the four-star Daingerfield (TX) athlete Aeryn Hampton and four-star Aledo cornerback Jaden Allen.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2024 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 6 in the nation and in the top spot in the Big 12. Texas also ranks second in the country among 2024 recruiting classes for the highest-average commitment ranking, only behind the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Texas also has the only 2024 class with at least three commits, all of which rank inside the top 150 in the nation in the 247Sports Composite.

Who’s next up for Texas football in the 2024 class after landing 4-Star WR/ATH Hunter Moddon?

Here’s a look at a prediction of who the next commit in the Longhorns 2024 class will be after landing Moddon on Sep. 2.

James Peoples, RB

A running back target of the Longhorns 2024 class that emerged this summer is the unranked San Antonio Veteran’s Memorial product James Peoples. The recent Texas offer was on campus for a couple of unofficial visits over the summer, with the latest coming for the July Texas BBQ. He also visited Texas in mid-June.

Texas and new running backs coach Tashard Choice appear to be making Peoples one of their top priorities at the position as the summer comes to a close. He was also was on the first running backs to get communication among targets of the 2024 class once the dead period lifted on Sep. 1.

There are quite a few signs that Texas is really making it known how much they want Peoples.

It’s also pretty clear at this point of the 2024 recruiting cycle that the five-star IMG Academy running back Jerrick Gibson is the top priority at the position for this class. But Peoples might be the top target to fill the role of RB2 in the 2024 class.

If Texas keeps pushing this fall with Peoples, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him commit to the 2024 class before next offseason arrives.
