4 overreactions from Texas football’s dominant win over ULM
Special teams will be the bigger roller coaster ride for Texas in 2022
This might be the smallest overreaction of the four on this list for the Longhorns coming out of Week 1. Saying that the Texas special teams unit is going to be the most inconsistent side of the ball throughout the entire season seems like more of a likelihood coming out of Week 1 than it does a hyperbolic prediction.
The special teams unit managed to make some big plays as some notable mistakes in multiple ways in this game too. The punting unit wasn’t very impressive in this game.
Between freshman punter Isaac Pearson bobbling one snap that he should’ve gotten off cleanly and the entire punting unit averaging well under 40 yards per punt in this game, that group showed us mostly negative plays. The kicking game also had its struggles, which also traces back to a bad hold from Pearson.
Pearson had the toughest day of anyone on this Texas special teams unit in the opener without a doubt.
Yet, there were some pretty good plays from the special teams unit too. Texas got a huge punt block that was returned for a touchdown. Senior cornerback D’Shawn Jamison got all of the ball on a block on the first punt of the game. Redshirt junior running back Keilan Robinson took that Jamison punt block back for the first score of the game.
There was also a nice punt return in this game from star sophomore wide receiver Xavier Worthy where he made some ULM players miss and went for more than 20 yards.
All in all, it’s hard to get a clear read on how good this special teams unit will be in 2022. One thing I can confidently say coming out of this game is that the special teams unit will be the most unpredictable side of the ball for Texas this season.
