Trey Owens (2024), QB

We now turn our attention to one of the key recruits to watch for the Longhorns 2024 class.

One of the key 2024 unofficial visitors that will be on campus for the Texas-Alabama game this weekend is the rising three-star Cy-Fair quarterback Trey Owens. He will be the lone quarterback among the 2024 visitors on campus this weekend from the list we have now.

Owens is a potent 6-foot-5 and 200-pound signal-caller that has a big arm and some real promise if he can continue to develop some of his raw physical tools. The big arm and zip that Owens can put on the ball jumps off the screen at you when watching his high school and camp film.

There are also flashes of Owens having some really impressive accuracy throwing to different levels of the field. Owens is showing flashes of a quarterback that can make a lot of the throws necessary to be successful in Sark’s offensive scheme.

But there are still strides that Owens must make in terms of his footwork in the pocket and play diagnosis. The consistency of his accuracy and timing in terms of hitting some of those tighter-window throws is also an area where Owens must improve in the next year or two.

It looks like Sark is going after another developmental quarterback that is a solid scheme fit with his offense. That narrative has some similarity to what Sark and the Longhorns did by signing the former Junipero Serra four-star quarterback recruit and true freshman Maalik Murphy in the 2022 class.

Moreover, Texas has yet to offer a single in-state quarterback recruit for the 2024 class. If the fact that Owens is the only quarterback recruit on the visitor list for this weekend is any indication, this could be a sign that he will be the first at the position to get an offer. And if Owens and the staff clicks during the unofficial visit this weekend, it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest to see an offer go his way in the near future.
