4 overreactions from Texas football’s controversial loss to Alabama
Now with more than 24 hours to digest some of the fallout from the result of the high-stakes meeting between Texas football and the No. 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in Austin on Sep. 10, we can give some thoughts on what happened this weekend. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian fought the entire way against legendary head coach Nick Saban and Alabama in a valiant effort at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Sep. 10.
Sark and the Longhorns must now deal with some of the issues that came about during this matchup against the Tide. One of those challenges that Sark and the Longhorns staff will now have to deal with is the injury situation at the quarterback position.
Texas saw both redshirt freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers and junior Hudson Card deal with various injury issues in this game. And it also looks like Texas is getting the likes of star junior running back Bijan Robinson and senior cornerback D’Shawn Jamison evaluated further coming out of the weekend due to various injury issues.
Nonetheless, there are still some real positives coming out of the weekend, despite the controversial 20-19 loss to the Crimson Tide on Sep. 10.
Overreactions from Texas football’s one-point loss to Alabama
Here’s a look at four overreactions from Texas’ loss to Alabama in Week 2.
DeMarvion Overshown is the best player on this Texas defense
There were plenty of positives that we saw from the Texas defense coming out of this game under the guidance of co-DC/LB coach Pete Kwiatkowski and special assistant to the head coach Gary Patterson. And one player on this defense that stood out for the second straight week was senior linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.
Through two games this season, Overshown has now registered more than a dozen combined tackles, two tackles for loss, three quarterback pressures, six stops, and three run stuffs.
Best of all, though, Overshown is making a bigger impact on the run defense for the Longhorns and he’s not missing as many tackles. Overshown has just one missed tackle on the season so far, which puts him at a missed tackle rate lower than eight percent. If that trend holds true for the rest of the season, that would mean that Overshown’s missed tackle rate is more than cut in half compared to his previous best campaign in this stat department.
Last but not least, Overshown has posted the best coverage grade of his career thus far if this trends holds true.
The fact of the matter is that Overshown is playing well and having a positive impact on multiple different areas of this defense. He’s making better reads off the snap and is making fewer mistakes when it matters most.
A good example of how the improvement of Overshown, combined with the strides this entire defense has made so far this season, is the fact that the senior linebacker has four run stops at an average depth of tackle of 2.3 yards from the line of scrimmage. That is roughly half the average depth of tackle in run defense that Overshown had last season, indicating that this front seven is getting a much better push in pursuit of the ball carrier.
